Samuel Trelawny was an important figure in 17th-century England. He was known for his work as a lawyer and for his role in politics. He helped make laws and decisions for the country as a Member of Parliament.

Early Life and Education

Samuel Trelawny was born in 1630 and was the oldest surviving son of Robert Trelawny. His father was a successful merchant from a place called Ham and also served as a Member of Parliament for Plymouth.

Samuel started his studies at Exeter College, Oxford in 1647. After that, he went on to study law at Gray's Inn, which is a famous place in London where lawyers are trained. He became a qualified lawyer in 1661.

A Career in Politics

Samuel Trelawny had a busy career in politics. In 1659, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for a place called Bossiney. He served in the Third Protectorate Parliament during this time.

The next year, in 1660, he was elected as an MP for two different areas: Camelford and Plymouth. He chose to represent Plymouth in the Convention Parliament. This was a special Parliament that helped bring back the monarchy to England.

Samuel also took on other important jobs. In August 1660, he became a commissioner for assessment in Devon. This meant he helped decide and collect taxes. In 1661, he also became a commissioner for assessment in Cornwall. He was also made a J.P. for both Devon and Cornwall. A Justice of the Peace helps keep law and order in local areas.

He was re-elected as an MP for Plymouth in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament. He continued to serve in this role until he passed away in 1666.

Family and Later Life

Samuel Trelawny married Elizabeth Billing on February 5, 1651. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Billing, who was from Hengar. Samuel was also the brother of another notable person, John Trelawny.

Samuel Trelawny died at Hengar and was buried at St Tudy on April 26, 1666.
