He received this special award for his actions during a big sea battle called the Battle of Mobile Bay.
Who Was Samuel Kinnaird?
Samuel W. Kinnaird was born in New York City on May 2, 1840. When the American Civil War began, he was still living in New York. He decided to join the United States Navy to help his country.
He served as a landsman on a ship named the USS Lackawanna. A landsman was a sailor who was just starting out. It was a lower rank, but still very important for the ship's crew.
Heroism at Mobile Bay
On August 5, 1864, Samuel Kinnaird's ship, the Lackawanna, was part of a major battle. This battle was called the Battle of Mobile Bay. It took place in Mobile Bay, Alabama.
During the battle, the Lackawanna fought very close to an enemy ship. This enemy ship was the CSS Tennessee. Even though the fighting was intense and dangerous, Kinnaird stayed calm. He showed "presence of mind and cheerfulness." This means he was thinking clearly and stayed positive. His good attitude helped keep his shipmates' spirits up during the tough fight.
For his bravery and positive attitude during this important battle, Samuel Kinnaird was given the Medal of Honor. He received this award just four months later, on December 31, 1864.
