The Amazing Artificial Lagoon
The most famous part of San Alfonso del Mar is its giant swimming pool, which is actually an artificial lagoon. When it was finished in 2006, it was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest pool in the world by its size!
This huge pool is 1,013 meters (3,323 feet) long. That's more than half a mile! It covers an area of 8.2 hectares (20 acres), which is like 15 football fields. The lagoon holds about 66 million US gallons (250 million liters) of seawater. Its deepest point is 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) deep.
The water for the lagoon comes from the nearby Pacific Ocean. It is then carefully filtered and treated to make it clean and safe for swimming. Only people staying at the resort are allowed to use this amazing pool.
The company that helped create this incredible lagoon is called Crystal Lagoons. It was started by Fernando Fischmann. Other companies, like Inmobiliaria El Plomo and the architects Marques + Garcés & Asociados Arquitectos, also helped build this huge project.
