Algarrobo (pronounced al-ga-RO-bo) is a city and a local area (called a commune) in Chile. It's located in the San Antonio Province within the Valparaíso Region. This city sits right on Chile's central coast.
Algarrobo is a very popular place for people from Santiago to visit in the summer. It's known as an upscale community. Near Algarrobo, you'll find the San Alfonso del Mar resort. This resort is famous for having the world's largest outdoor swimming pool!
Close to the shore, there's a special place called Islote Pájaros Niños. This rocky island is a nature sanctuary. It's home to many interesting birds. You can see Humboldt penguins, Peruvian pelicans, and Guanay cormorants living there.
People and the Land in Algarrobo
Algarrobo covers an area of about 175.6 square kilometers. That's roughly 67.8 square miles. In 2002, a count of the population (called a census) showed that 8,601 people lived there.
- Out of these, 4,369 were men and 4,232 were women.
- Most people, about 77.1% (6,628 people), lived in the city areas.
- The rest, about 22.9% (1,973 people), lived in the countryside.
Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Algarrobo grew a lot. The population increased by 44.1%, which means 2,633 more people moved there.
How Algarrobo is Governed
Algarrobo is a commune, which is a local administrative area in Chile. It's managed by a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.
From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde of Algarrobo was Jorge Luis Pizarro Romero. The municipal council helps the alcalde make decisions for the community.
Algarrobo is also part of larger areas that choose national leaders.
- In the Chamber of Deputies (one part of Chile's national government), Algarrobo is represented by María José Hoffmann and Víctor Torres.
- In the Senate (the other part of Chile's national government), Algarrobo is represented by Francisco Chahuán Chahuán and Ricardo Lagos Weber.
These representatives help make laws and decisions for the whole country, including Algarrobo.
