Founding the Settlement
The city of San Buenaventura has a long history. It was first settled in 1660. Two important people, Capitán Juan de Munguía and Villela, along with Fr. Gerónimo de Birues, helped start the community.
They called it "The Valley of San Buenaventura." They worked with the local Chinarra and Suma people to establish this new place.
Who Lives There?
Most of the people living in San Buenaventura are Mestizo. This means they have a mixed heritage. Their ancestors include the early Spanish settlers and the native Chinarra and Suma people.
