The San Carlos Convent is a very old and important building in San Lorenzo, Santa Fe, Argentina. It's famous because a big battle, the Battle of San Lorenzo, happened right next to it. Both the convent and the battlefield are now special places called National Historic Monuments of Argentina. This means they are protected because of their history.
History of the Convent
When a group of priests called the Jesuits left the area known as the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, another group, the Franciscan friars, moved into a chapel. This chapel was in a place called San Miguel del Carcarañal.
In 1790, the Franciscans wanted to build a new place farther away from the Parana river. The governor, Félix Aldao, gave them the land where the convent stands today. That same year, they built a chapel, a well, a house for a monk, and a shed for workers.
The shed was made bigger in 1792, and a fence was put around the chapel. The Franciscan friars finally moved into their new home in 1796.
Important Visitors and Events
In 1811, Manuel Belgrano, a famous Argentine general, visited the convent. He was returning from a military trip to Paraguay. The next year, the chapel helped him build two important military posts in Rosario.
Later, José de San Martín, another very important Argentine general, was following a Spanish ship on the Parana river. He cleverly hid his soldiers inside the convent. The Spanish ship landed nearby, planning to attack and steal from the chapel. But San Martín launched a surprise attack and defeated them in the Battle of San Lorenzo.
After the battle, the chapel was used as a place to treat the injured soldiers. The convent was also a significant spot in 1819. Belgrano, Estanislao López, and Francisco Ramírez signed a peace agreement there.
A National Monument
The San Carlos Convent was officially declared a National Monument on October 2, 1940. This was done by a special law, number 12.648.
In 2008, the mayor of San Lorenzo made an agreement with the Argentine military. This agreement allowed the Regiment of Mounted Grenadiers to have a permanent presence at the site. Today, the chapel also works as a museum. Visitors can learn all about the famous Battle of San Lorenzo there.
