History of the San Carlos Convent
Building the Convent
The San Carlos Convent was built by Franciscan friars. These friars moved to the area after another group, the Jesuits, left the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. In 1790, the Franciscans wanted to build a new chapel further away from the Parana river. The governor at the time, Félix Aldao, gave them the land.
That same year, they built a chapel, a well, a house for a monk, and a shed for workers. The shed was made bigger in 1792. The chapel was also fenced. The Franciscan friars finally moved into their new home in 1796.
Important Visitors and Events
Many important people visited the convent. In 1811, Manuel Belgrano stopped there. He was returning from a military campaign in Paraguay. The chapel helped him the next year. He used it to build two important military batteries. These batteries were called "Independencia" and "Libertad." They were built in what is now Rosario.
The Battle of San Lorenzo
The convent played a big role in the Battle of San Lorenzo. José de San Martín was a famous general. He was following a royalist ship on the Parana River. San Martín hid his soldiers inside the convent. The royalist ship landed nearby. They tried to steal from the chapel. But San Martín launched a surprise attack. He defeated them in the Battle of San Lorenzo. After the battle, the chapel became a hospital. Injured soldiers received medical care there.
The chapel was also a place for important agreements. In 1819, Belgrano, Estanislao López, and Francisco Ramírez signed a peace agreement there.
A National Monument and Museum
The San Carlos Convent became a National Monument on October 2, 1940. This was made official by law 12.648. In 2008, the mayor of San Lorenzo, Raimundo, made an agreement. This agreement allowed the Regiment of Mounted Grenadiers to have a permanent presence at the site. Today, the chapel also works as a museum. It teaches visitors about the Battle of San Lorenzo.
