Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The San Diego College for Women was a special school just for women in San Diego, California. It was a private college run by the Catholic Church. In 1972, it joined with San Diego University, which was a college for men. Together, they became the University of San Diego, where both young men and women could study.

History of the College

The San Diego College for Women was started in 1950. It was founded by Mother Rosalie Hill, who was a leader in the Society of the Sacred Heart. The college first opened its doors to students in February 1952. About 33 students enrolled, and there were nine staff members.

Early Years and Growth

Mother Catherine Parks was the first president of the college. Mother Rosalie Hill was also an important honorary president. The very first student to graduate from the College for Women was Therese Truitt Whitcomb in 1953. The first graduation ceremony, where nine students received their degrees, happened the next year.

In 1956, Mother Frances Danz became the new president. During her first year, the college received full approval from California. This meant it was a recognized and good place to learn. The college also started a nursing program. This program worked with Mercy College of Nursing nearby. Two years later, in 1958, the college grew even more. It began offering graduate degrees, which are advanced studies after a first degree.

Joining Forces with the Men's College

Mother Anne Farraher became president in 1963. A few years later, in 1965, the college started thinking about joining with San Diego University. This idea came from a special meeting called the Second Vatican Council. It encouraged Catholic schools to work together.

Mother Nancy Morris became president in 1968. By 1969, she helped introduce classes where both men and women could learn together. This was a step towards becoming a coeducational school. That same year, the two colleges also held their graduation ceremonies together for the first time.

The Merger

In 1972, the San Diego College for Women officially joined with the College for Men. They also joined with the School of Law. This happened because they wanted to share resources and help with money problems. This merger created the University of San Diego as we know it today.
