San Francisco is a lively city in Argentina. It sits right on the eastern edge of the Córdoba province. Some parts of the city even cross over into the Santa Fe province. This city is an important hub where two major roads, Route 19 and Route 158, meet. San Francisco is the fourth largest city in Córdoba, with about 59,000 people living there. It is also the main city of the San Justo Department.

The city is built in a low area of land. Because of this, heavy summer rains can sometimes cause floods. Streets might get covered with up to two feet of water. The heart of San Francisco is Plaza San Martin. This big brick plaza is a popular spot for events and celebrations. Many of the city's streets are made of cobblestones, which have become smooth and dark from all the traffic.

How San Francisco Began

The city of San Francisco was started on September 9, 1886. A person named José Bernardo Iturraspe helped create it. This was part of a plan by the local government to set up new towns. The city's current location is a little south of where it first began, moving there in 1888. Around the same time, train tracks from the Córdoba Central Railway reached the area. San Francisco was officially named a city in 1915.

Many people living in San Francisco today are immigrants. A large number of them came from the Piedmont region of Italy. They arrived as refugees during and after World War I and World War II.

City Development Over Time

For many years, San Francisco did not have running water services. This changed in the 1940s when the city finally got water pipes. Also in the 1940s, Route 19 connected San Francisco to the capital cities of Córdoba and Santa Fe. In the 1960s, the old train tracks from the Central Córdoba Railway were taken out of the city center. This helped to modernize the area.

What Drives San Francisco's Economy?

San Francisco's economy mainly depends on farming. However, the city also has many factories that work with metal. These factories make different products like:

  • Electrical panels (from WEG)
  • Car parts (from ZF SACHS)
  • Large containers called tolvas (from AKRON)

Many jobs in San Francisco are in construction and renovation. Because many Italian immigrants settled here, there are also several pasta factories. Two very important food companies, SanCor and Grupo Arcor, have factories near the city.

Major Companies in the Area

  • SanCor: This company is one of Argentina's top dairy producers. It makes a lot of the country's dairy products and exports most of Argentina's dairy. SanCor is a large cooperative, meaning it's made up of many smaller farms working together. Its main area is near the border of Santa Fe and Córdoba provinces.
  • Grupo Arcor: This food company started on July 5, 1951. It is known for making sweets and candies. Grupo Arcor is the biggest exporter of candy from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru. In 2005, Arcor had 31 factories, with 27 of them in Argentina. It is one of the world's largest candy makers and the biggest cookie producer in South America. Arcor sends its products to over 117 countries.

Famous People from San Francisco
