Early Days and County Seat
The town of San Francisco was once very important. It was reportedly the first "county seat" for Carver County, Minnesota. A county seat is like the main town or capital for a county. It's where the county government offices are located. However, San Francisco lost this important role to Chaska just one year later.
A Short-Lived Town
San Francisco only lasted for about ten years after it was founded. It had a post office for a short time. The post office was open from 1856 to 1858. It opened again from 1861 to 1862. The town was still listed in a U.S. federal census record in 1870. This shows it existed as a town at that time.
