San Francisco La Unión is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Quetzaltenango department of Guatemala. It is well-known for its big market where people buy and sell many things. The town has five main areas, or cantones, called Centro, Pala, Paxan, Xeaj, Chuistancia, and Tzanjuyup.
History of San Francisco La Unión
San Francisco La Unión was officially started in the year 1883. The people who live here today are mostly descendants from a nearby town called San Francisco El Alto, which is in a different department of Guatemala called Totonicapán.
Celebrations and Traditions
The town has a special yearly celebration from January 15th to January 18th, which includes a traditional dance. Another important event is held on October 4th. This day honors San Francisco de Asís, a very important figure. During this celebration, schools in the area often have parades.
Local Government
The leader of San Francisco La Unión is called the mayor. As of January 15, 2024, the mayor is Francisco Gonzalez. He studied agricultural engineering, which means he learned about farming and how to improve it. Mayor Gonzalez is part of a political group known as the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity.
