San Ignacio is a city in Peru. It is one of the thirteen provinces in the Cajamarca Region. A province is like a large county or district. The regional government of Cajamarca manages this area.
San Ignacio is located in northern Peru. It shares a border with Ecuador to the north. To the east, it borders the Amazonas Region. The province of Jaén is to its south. To the west, it borders the Piura Region.
This area is famous for its coffee, honey, and natural forests. Most people in San Ignacio work in agriculture. Growing coffee is their main economic activity.
History of San Ignacio
Becoming a Province
In 1926, people started talking about making San Ignacio a province. They wanted it to be its own official area. A group was chosen to travel to Lima, the capital city. Their job was to discuss this important idea.
This group included Father Juan Cabrera Arias, Donovan Bartolini Rangel, and Luis Manuel Soto Adrianzén Salary Huaman. They met with military leaders in Lima. These leaders were in charge of the government at that time.
Official Creation Date
Their hard work paid off! On May 12, 1965, San Ignacio officially became a province. This happened because of a special law, Law No. 15560. Fernando Belaunde Terry was the president of Peru at that time.
