History of the Cathedral
The San Isidro Cathedral was built where an older chapel once stood. That first chapel was opened in 1706 by Captain Domingo de Acassuso, who founded the city.
The current cathedral was designed by two French architects, Dunant and Paquin. It officially opened its doors on July 14, 1898.
Cathedral Design and Style
The San Isidro Cathedral is built in the neogothic style. This means it looks like the grand churches from the Middle Ages, but it was built much later. It stands very tall, reaching about 68 meters (223 feet) into the sky.
The church's base is shaped like a Latin cross. Its strong walls are made from stone and bricks. Inside, you can see beautiful stained glass windows that let colorful light shine through. The cathedral was carefully restored, and this big project was finished in 2007.
San Isidro Festival
Every year, on May 15, people celebrate the festival of Isidore the Labourer. This special day honors the patron saint of San Isidro.
