San Juan de Taperas is a small village in Bolivia. It is located in the Santa Cruz Department, within the Chiquitos Province. The village is part of the San José de Chiquitos Municipality.
Near San Juan de Taperas, you can find the old ruins of a mission called San Juan Bautista. This mission was one of the Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos. However, only a stone tower remains today. Because so little of it is left, San Juan Bautista is not one of the six Jesuit Missions in Chiquitos that are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
In 2012, the village of San Juan de Taperas had 832 people living there.
History of San Juan Bautista Mission
The Jesuit mission of San Juan Bautista was first started in 1699. Two Jesuit missionaries, Juan Bautista Zea and Juan Patricio Fernández, founded it. They started this new mission because the nearby San José mission had become too large.
Native tribes like the Subereca, Peta, and Piñoca lived at the San Juan Bautista mission. Sadly, the mission had to close in 1705 because of a serious illness that spread. The missionaries wanted to move the mission to a new spot, but the local people did not want to move. So, the mission was closed down.
Later, in 1713, the mission was opened again in a different location.
Languages Spoken
Long ago, people in San Juan spoke a dialect of the Chiquitano language called Tao (Yúnkarirsh).
Today, most people in San Juan de Taperas speak a type of Spanish called Camba Spanish. This version of Spanish includes many words that come from the old Chiquitano language.
