San Juan y Todos los Santos, Córdoba

San Juan y Todos los Santos, also called Iglesia de la Trinidad, is a beautiful Catholic church in Córdoba, Spain. You can find it in the Plaza de la Trinidad. This church stands where an old monastery, the Convento de la Trinidad, was built way back in 1236. That was soon after King Fernando III took over the city. The church is built in the fancy Baroque style. It's part of the Historic centre of Córdoba, which is a special place recognized by UNESCO World Heritage.

History of the Church

People believe the first church and monastery were built on the spot of an old mosque. But there are no parts of that mosque left today. Also, there are no remains of an even older church called San Juan de los Caballeros.

We do know that the roof of the original building fell in during the 1500s. Don Martin de Córdoba paid for it to be fixed. Later, the building became run down again. So, people decided to build a brand new church! This new church was finished and opened on Trinity Sunday in 1705.

The church is built in the Baroque style, which means it has lots of detailed decorations. It's shaped like a Latin cross when you look down from above. The main part of the church, called the nave, has a rounded ceiling that looks like a barrel. This ceiling is decorated with painted sections. Above the middle part of the church, called the transept, there's a big dome.

Inside the church, you can see some amazing art. There's a statue of Christ the Saviour from 1590. No one knows who carved it! This statue came from another old church nearby. You can also see newer paintings, like Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazerano by Antonio Dubé de Luque and María Santísima de la Trinidad by Antonio Salto.

The main entrance of the church has many detailed decorations. These stand out against the white walls. The entrance has a round arch with double columns on each side. Above these columns, there are special carvings. The top part of the entrance has twisted columns and sculptures. In a small space, there's a group of sculptures showing an angel helping two captives.

The square-shaped room where priests get ready, called the sacristy, has beautiful paintings. These were done by a famous artist named Antonio Palomino (1653–1726). They show scenes from the Old Testament that are connected to the Eucharist, which is a special religious ceremony. The church also has many decorated altars with artworks from the 1600s and 1700s.
