The St. Louis the King Cathedral (also known as Catedral Metropolitana de San Luis Rey) is a beautiful Catholic church in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. It is the main church for the Catholic community in the area. You can find it in the historic center of the city, right on the east side of the main square.

About the Cathedral

This important building serves as the main church for the Archdiocese of San Luis Potosí. It is dedicated to St. Louis King of France, a famous king from the 13th century.

A Look at Its History

The cathedral you see today was built a long time ago. Construction started in 1670 and finished in 1730. It officially became a cathedral in 1854. This means it has been a central place of worship for over 170 years.

What It Looks Like

The front of the cathedral, called the façade, is designed in a style known as Baroque. This style is known for being very detailed and decorative. The façade looks like a large screen and has three main parts. It is similar to the design of the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

The Main Altar

Inside the cathedral, the main altar is a very important part. It is made of masonry, which is like stone or brickwork. The altar has two main sections. In the first section, you can see a statue or image of St. Louis King of France. The second section holds an image of Our Lady of the Expectation.
