History of San Martín del Tesorillo
The story of San Martín del Tesorillo began with farming.
Founding of the Agricultural Colony
The first farming community here was started by Martín Larios y Larios. He was the son of Martín Larios Herreros, who was the first Marquess of Larios. A marquess is a noble title, like a duke or count. Martín Larios y Larios was also in charge of a company called the Guadiaro Industrial and Agricultural Society.
This company, along with another one, created several farming communities in the Campo de Gibraltar area. San Martín del Tesorillo was one of them. It focused on growing and processing wheat. Other communities included San Pablo de Buceite, which made olive oil, and San Luis de Sabinillas, which produced sugar. These communities were set up after the Larios family bought large estates from the House of Medina Sidonia in 1869.
Land Division and New Settlers
In the 1930s, a famous landowner named Juan March bought these large farms from the Larios family. He then divided them into smaller plots of land. He sold these plots to farmers from other parts of Andalusia and from the Valencia region. Not many people from Jimena or other nearby towns moved here. This might have been because they were unsure about Juan March.
Becoming an Independent Town
San Martín del Tesorillo was officially called an agricultural colony in 1879. However, it really started to grow as a town in the 1930s. This happened after the land was divided and new settlers arrived.
The town gained more control over its own affairs on April 24, 1999. The regional government of Andalusia approved it as an "Autonomous Local Entity." This meant its local government had its own powers. It could also manage its own money and debts within its area, which is about 48.57 square kilometers.
Finally, in 2018, San Martín del Tesorillo officially separated from the Jimena de la Frontera town council. Since October 3 of that year, it has been its very own municipality.
