San Pablo de Loreto is a small village in Peru. It is located near the city of Iquitos. This village was once home to a special community for people with a skin condition called leprosy.
History of San Pablo
The special community in San Pablo de Loreto was built in 1925. It was a place where people with leprosy could live and receive care. At first, it was mainly a medical center.
Life in the Colony
In 1941, the community changed. It became an agricultural colony. This meant that the people living there helped by working in the fields. This helped them to be more self-sufficient.
Around 1952, two famous travelers, Che Guevara and Alberto Granado, spent time working at the colony. At that time, about 600 people lived there. By 1957, the number of residents had grown to about 780.
Closing of the Colony
After 1967, new patients were no longer admitted to the colony. A report from 1968 showed that many patients needed special medical care. Eventually, the community closed down. The people who lived there were moved to Iquitos, where they could continue to receive care.
