Guelatao is famous for being the birthplace of President Benito Juárez. His parents were Zapotec farmers. Benito Juárez was very important because he was the first indigenous president of Mexico.

When he was born, Guelatao was a tiny village with fewer than 100 people. It was part of the larger town of Ixtlán. Juárez was baptized in the church at Ixtlán, which is now called Ixtlán de Juárez in his honor. Guelatao became its own independent municipality in 1824, after Mexico became free from Spain.

Today, the town has a small museum dedicated to Benito Juárez. It tells the story of his life and his important work for Mexico.

Local Radio Station

Guelatao is also home to XEGLO. This is a special radio station run by the government. It broadcasts in different indigenous languages like Zapotec, Mixe, and Chinantec. It helps keep these languages and cultures alive.

People of Guelatao

In 2005, San Pablo Guelatao had about 476 people living in 111 homes. Most of the people living here are indigenous Zapotec people. The area is mostly rural, meaning it has a lot of countryside.
