The Story of San Pascual Pueblo
A Big Village in the 1500s
San Pascual Pueblo was the biggest village of the Piro people in the 1500s. Experts believe that more than 2,000 people lived there. This made it a very important center for the Piro community.
The pueblo was located where people could see another Piro village called Senecú. Senecú was on the west side of the Rio Grande river, a bit to the south. Being able to see each other might have helped these communities stay connected.
San Pascualito: An Older Neighbor
Close to San Pascual Pueblo, there was an even older and smaller Piro village. This village was known as San Pascualito. It was built around the 1300s, which is a century before San Pascual Pueblo became so large.
San Pascualito was located on a small hill about 100 feet above the river valley. It was a well-protected village, showing that the people who lived there knew how to defend themselves.
