San Roque is a lively town and municipality in the Antioquia region of Colombia. It's part of the Northeastern Antioquia area. The town sits high up, about 1,475 meters (4,839 feet) above sea level.
San Roque was started on February 8, 1880, by Francisco Martinez de Ospina. It was founded because people found gold nearby! The town is located between two rivers, the Nare River and the Nus River. It's about 121 kilometers (75 miles) north of Medellín, a big city in Colombia. People in San Roque love to celebrate many of the traditional festivals that are popular across Colombia.

History of San Roque
San Roque officially became a municipality in 1884. This means it became its own local government area.
The Antioquia Railway
In 1911, the Antioquia Railway was built. This railway passed close to San Roque. It helped the town's economy a lot by making it easier to transport goods and people.
A Mining Town
For a long time, San Roque was known as an important mining center. People came here to find gold and other valuable minerals. This rich history is one reason why tourists visit San Roque today.
The Land of Cordiality
San Roque is often called "The Land of Cordiality". This special nickname comes from how friendly and welcoming the local people are to visitors.
