Sanan Kachornprasart (born September 7, 1935 – died February 15, 2013) was an important Thai politician and a military officer. He reached the rank of Major General in the army. He served as a Deputy Prime Minister in the government led by Abhisit Vejjajiva. He was also a main advisor for the Chartthaipattana Party.

Early Life and Military Career

Sanan Kachornprasart was born in Pho Thale, which is in Phichit, Thailand. He studied at the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy in Thailand. He also trained at the United States Army Armor School in Kentucky, USA.

After his training, he became an officer in the tank division of the Royal Thai Army. In 1977, he was removed from the army because he supported a change in government. At that time, he was a lieutenant colonel. He was held in prison for a while but was released in 1979. Later, he was given back his military rank and promoted to Major General.

Sanan's Political Journey

After his military career, Sanan Kachornprasart became involved in politics. He joined the Democrat Party. He was the Secretary-General of the party from 1988 until 2000.

Key Government Roles

Sanan held several important positions in the Thai government:

  • He was the Minister of Agriculture from 1988 to 1990.
  • He served as Deputy Prime Minister for a few months in 1990 under Chatichai Choonhavan.
  • From 1992 to 1994, he was the Minister of Industry.
  • He also served as Interior Minister from 1994 to 1995 in Chuan Leekpai's first government.
  • He became Interior Minister again from 1997 to 2000 and was Deputy Prime Minister from 1998 to 2000.

Changes in Political Parties

In 2000, there was a legal issue concerning some of Sanan's financial information. A court decided that he could not hold political office for five years.

After this five-year period, Sanan left the Democrat Party. In 2004, he started a new political group called the Mahachon Party. He was the secretary of this new party. In the 2005 election, his party won a small number of seats in the parliament.

In 2007, Sanan and his son, Siriwat, joined the Thai Nation Party. This party was part of the government at that time. In 2008, the Thai Nation Party was dissolved by a court decision. Most of its members then formed a new party called the Chartthaipattana Party (CTP). Sanan became a chief advisor for this new party.

In December 2008, the CTP joined a government led by the Democrat Party. Sanan was appointed Deputy Prime Minister again. He focused on social policies. After the 2011 election, he stepped down from his role, even though his party was part of the new government.
