Sanath Nishantha Perera, known as Sanath Nishantha, was a politician from Sri Lanka. He was born on May 3, 1975, and passed away on January 25, 2024. He served as a Member of Parliament, representing the Puttalam District. He was elected in 2015 and again in 2020.
Sanath Nishantha also held important roles as a Minister of State. He was the Minister of State for Water Supply and earlier, the Minister of State for Fisheries. He was a member of the United People's Freedom Alliance and later the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna political parties.
Early Life and School
Sanath Nishantha Perera was born in Chilaw, Sri Lanka, on May 3, 1975. Chilaw is located in the North Western Province. He was the second of five children in his family. He had an older sister and three younger brothers. Sanath Nishantha went to St. Mary's Boys College in Chilaw for his early education.
Political Journey
Sanath Nishantha started his political journey in 1997. He first ran for a local council called the Arachchikattuwa Divisional Council. He was not elected at first. However, after the person who was elected passed away, Sanath Nishantha was chosen to join the council.
In 2004, he ran for the provincial council elections in the North Western Province. He was elected to this council. He was re-elected two more times, in 2009 and 2013. In 2013, he received the most votes in the Puttalam District, with 62,996 votes.
During his time in the provincial council, Sanath Nishantha took on important jobs. On May 31, 2010, he was made the Minister of Fisheries, Highways, and Power for the province. This appointment was made by the Chief Minister, Athula Wijesinghe.
Sanath Nishantha ran for the national parliament for the first time in 2015. He was elected with 80,082 votes. While Gotabaya Rajapaksa was president, Sanath Nishantha served in different roles. He was the Minister of State for Fisheries. Later, he became the Minister of State for Water Supply.
After some changes in the government in 2022, he was reappointed as the Minister of State for Water Supply. He served in this role from September 8, 2022, until his passing.
Family Life
Sanath Nishantha was married to Chamari Perera. They had four children together: three daughters and one son. He was a devoted Roman Catholic.
His Passing
Sanath Nishantha passed away on January 25, 2024. He was involved in a car accident on the Katunayake Highway. His car collided with a barrier and a truck. He was taken to the Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama, where he died. A member of his security team also passed away in the accident. His driver was injured.
His funeral was held on January 28, 2024. He was laid to rest at the Rajakadaluwa Catholic Cemetery in Arachchikattuwa, Puttalam.
