Sancha of Portugal (born February 2, 1264 – died 1279) was a young princess from Portugal. She was known as an infanta, which is the title for a daughter of the King of Portugal or Spain. Sancha was the daughter of Afonso III of Portugal, who was the King of Portugal, and his second wife, Beatrice of Castile.
Early Life and Family
Sancha was born on February 2, 1264, in the Kingdom of Portugal. Her father, King Afonso III, ruled Portugal. Her mother, Beatrice of Castile, came from the royal family of Castile, a kingdom in what is now Spain. Sancha had several brothers and sisters. One of her sisters was Blanche, who was also an infanta.
A Short Life
Not much is known about Sancha's everyday life. She was a royal princess, but she did not live very long. She traveled with her mother and sister Blanche to Seville. Seville was a big city in the Crown of Castile, which is now part of Spain. Sancha died in Seville in 1279 when she was only about 15 or 16 years old.
Resting Place
After her death, Sancha was first buried in Seville. However, her family wanted her to be buried in her home country of Portugal. So, in 1302, her remains were moved. She was reburied at the Monastery of Alcobaça in Alcobaça, Portugal. This monastery is a very important historical site in Portugal.
