Infante Sancho of Castile (born 1233 – died 27 October 1261) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in Spain. He served as the Archbishop of Toledo and also as the Chancellor of Castile from 1259 until he passed away.

Sancho's Early Life

Sancho was a prince, the seventh child and sixth son of King Ferdinand III of Castile. His mother was Elisabeth of Swabia.

His father wanted Sancho and his older brother, Philip, to become church leaders. Their grandmother, Queen Berengaria of Castile, helped with their education. She asked Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, who was also an Archbishop of Toledo, to teach them.

The Archbishop sent the young princes to the University of Paros. There, they learned from a very famous teacher named Albert the Great.

Becoming Archbishop

Infante Sancho became the Archbishop of Toledo in 1259. This was a very important position in the church.

In 1261, he attended a special meeting called the Cortes of Seville. During this meeting, something unusual happened. In December 1260, when Sancho entered Seville, he carried his special archbishop's cross.

This upset Raimundo de Losana, who was the Archbishop of Seville. He thought Sancho was trying to show that his own church was more important. But Sancho explained that he didn't mean to cause any trouble.

His Death and Burial

Archbishop Sancho died when he was only 28 years old. No one is completely sure where he was buried. He might have been laid to rest in the Cathedral of Toledo. Another possible place is the Abbey of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas.
