Life as a Royal Prince
Frederick grew up in the Kingdom of Castile. After the city of Seville was conquered, Frederick became unhappy with the rule of his brother, King Alfonso X. He might have joined a rebellion led by his brother Henry in 1255.
Exile and Adventures Abroad
Because of his disagreements with King Alfonso, Frederick was sent away from Castile in 1260. He then joined his brother Henry in Tunis, a city in North Africa. There, they served as knights for Sultan Al Mustansir, fighting against his enemies.
Later, Frederick went to serve King Manfred of Sicily. He fought in an important battle called the Battle of Benevento in 1266. After his side lost this battle, Frederick managed to escape and returned to Tunis.
Return to Sicily and Further Fights
In 1267, a rebellion started in Sicily against the ruling family, the Angevins. This gave Frederick a chance to return to the island. He helped gather support for Conradin, another royal claimant. His brother Henry, who was now a powerful leader in Rome, also supported Conradin.
Frederick continued fighting in Sicily even after Conradin was defeated in the Battle of Tagliacozzo. Henry was also captured and imprisoned. Frederick and his ally, Frederick Lancia, were eventually forced to surrender in Agrigento in 1269. However, instead of being imprisoned, they were allowed to escape back to Tunis. In Tunis, they helped defend the region against soldiers from the Eighth Crusade in 1270.
Return to Castile and Final Years
In 1272, Frederick and King Alfonso finally made peace. Frederick returned to Castile and became one of the king's trusted advisors. In 1274, he married a woman named Catherine Angelina.
Frederick became involved in plans about who would be the next king of Castile. His life ended in 1277 under difficult circumstances, by order of King Alfonso.
