History of Sand Coulee

Sand Coulee was first called Giffen in 1881. It was named after a person named Nat McGiffen. When the McGiffen family left the area, the name of the community changed to Sand Coulee.

In 1883, a company called Sand Coulee Coal Company started operating. They mined coal, which was a very important resource at the time. A famous businessman named James J. Hill saw how important this company could be. He bought it and changed its name to Cottonwood Coal Company.

Changes Over Time

Sand Coulee grew because of the coal mines. However, things started to change in the 1930s. Railroads, which used to carry coal, began using diesel engines instead of coal-powered steam engines. This meant less demand for coal. Because of this, the town slowly became smaller.
