About Sandré Swanson
Early Life and Learning
Sandré Swanson was born in Oakland, California. He went to college and earned two degrees. First, he received an associate degree in psychology from Oakland City College. This is usually a two-year college degree. Later, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from San Francisco State University. A bachelor's degree is a four-year college degree. Psychology is the study of how people think and behave.
His Journey in Politics
Swanson started his work in politics in 1971. His first role was on the Oakland Anti-Poverty Board. This group worked to help people in Oakland who were struggling financially.
He also worked for Shirley Chisholm's presidential campaign in 1972. A presidential campaign is when someone tries to become the President of the United States. Swanson was part of her "advance team," which helped prepare for her visits and events.
For many years, from 1973 to 1998, he worked for Congressman Ron Dellums. A Congressman is a person elected to represent their area in the U.S. Congress. Swanson was a district director and a senior policy advisor for Dellums. This means he helped manage the office and gave advice on important issues.
Later, Swanson became the chief of staff for Congresswoman Barbara Lee. A chief of staff helps manage the daily work of a politician's office. He also supported Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential election.
In 2024, Sandré Swanson ran for a seat in the California State Senate. This is another part of California's law-making body. He was one of several candidates in the primary election, where voters choose who will move on to the main election. He finished in fifth place in that primary race.
