History of the Sands Regency
The Sands Regency first opened its doors in the early 1970s. It was started by the Cladianos family. Back then, it was a smaller hotel with a casino. The first hotel tower was 15 stories tall.
Growing Bigger
Over time, the Sands Regency grew. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, a second tower was added. More space for the casino games was also built. The hotel's name became "Sands Regency."
By the late 1980s, a third and final tower was built. This made the hotel much bigger, with a total of 800 rooms. The new tower also included a parking garage. This tower was connected to the original buildings by a special walkway.
Popularity and New Features
The Sands Regency became very popular with local people. It was also a favorite spot for bowlers and people who play the card game Cribbage. The hotel made sure to welcome these groups.
In the mid-1990s, a famous restaurant called Tony Roma's Ribs House opened inside the hotel. Later, in 2000, a comedy club opened. An original "Mel's Diner" also opened, which added to the hotel's appeal.
Changes in Ownership
The Sands Regency has changed owners a few times. In 2006, a company called Herbst Gaming bought the hotel. They kept the name "Sands Regency" but added "A Terrible's Property" to it.
The hotel also went through a big update. Renovations started in 2005 and were finished in 2007 by the new owners.
New Look and Restaurants
Many people in Reno know the Sands Regency for its bright colors. For over 10 years, it was red with white parts. Then, in 2003, it was painted bright yellow with blue. This new look got different opinions from people.
After the Herbst company bought it, they painted it a softer gold with red. They even painted a skyline picture on the hotel towers. This creative new look got attention from the news.
The Tony Roma's restaurant closed in 2006. It was replaced by Fuzio Pasta and Steaks in 2007. Later, in 2011, Fuzio closed. It was quickly replaced by a nice restaurant called "The Copa." Mel's Diner is still open today. The hotel also has Taco's Tijuana, a coffee shop with free Wi-Fi, and a buffet that offers different food every night.
In 2013, the Sands Regency was sold to a new company called Truckee Gaming. Then, in 2017, Jacobs Entertainment bought the hotel.
