History of Sandy's Blasting Bronco
In September 2016, big plans were announced for the American Dream Meadowlands mall. The Nickelodeon Universe theme park would be built inside it. This was five years after the Triple Five Group took over the project.
Early pictures in 2017 showed a compact launch coaster. It was located at the back of the park. In January 2019, the company Ride Entertainment shared images of the coaster's layout.
On February 2, 2019, park officials shared exciting news. They were at the ACE EastCoaster event. Four of the park's roller coasters were revealed. Sandy's Blasting Bronco was one of them. Its name likely comes from Sandy Cheeks, a character from SpongeBob Squarepants.
Why Sandy's Blasting Bronco Opened Later
Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park opened on October 25, 2019. However, Sandy's Blasting Bronco did not open right away. It opened almost a year later. This was because it needed special safety approvals. The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs had to certify it.
Many people wondered why it was delayed. Then, in March 2020, the park had to close. This was due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The mall's future became uncertain. There were also reports of financial challenges.
Opening Day for the Coaster
In August 2020, things started to look better. Triple Five made a deal with lenders. This helped keep the American Dream mall open. It also helped Nickelodeon Universe.
New Jersey's Governor Phil Murphy allowed indoor amusement parks to reopen. So, Nickelodeon Universe opened its doors again on October 1, 2020. Sandy's Blasting Bronco finally opened on this day too. It has been thrilling riders ever since!
What It's Like to Ride Sandy's Blasting Bronco
The Ride Experience
When you get on Sandy's Blasting Bronco, the train launches right away! It reaches a top speed of 47.8 miles per hour (76.9 km/h). The train quickly goes through two cool flips. These are called Immelmann inversions.
Next, you go through a Roll over, which is two more inversions. Then, the train stops in the station. But the ride isn't over! The station floor spins the train around. Now you are facing backwards!
The train then goes for a second lap. You experience the launch and the flips all over again, but this time going backwards! Once the train returns to the station, it spins you back around to face forwards. Then, it's time to get off.
Coaster Statistics
Sandy's Blasting Bronco is a compact ride. It has 4 inversions and 1,607.6 feet (490.0 m) of track. The ride stands 85.3 feet (26.0 m) tall.
It uses a special launch system called a Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) launch. This powerful system sends riders to 47.8 miles per hour (76.9 km/h). It works whether you are going forwards or backwards.
The station platform is also a turntable. This allows the train to spin around. It can also move the train to a special track for maintenance. The ride uses one train that holds 12 passengers.
Intamin, a company from Liechtenstein, designed and built Sandy's Blasting Bronco. It is the first of their "Vertical LSM Model" coasters. This ride also has cool track lighting. It was installed by KCL Engineering, who also lit up the nearby TMNT Shellraiser coaster.
