Sandy Silver's Political Journey
Starting in the Yukon Assembly
Sandy Silver was first elected on October 11, 2011. He won against Steve Nordick in the Klondike area. This was an important win for the Yukon Liberal Party. At that time, the party only had two members in the assembly.
As a member of the assembly, Sandy Silver worked on several important groups. These groups looked at how the government spent money and how it chose people for important jobs. He also worked on committees that studied new laws.
Becoming Party Leader
On August 17, 2012, Sandy Silver became the temporary leader of the Yukon Liberal Party. This happened after the previous leader, Darius Elias, stepped down. Sandy Silver was the only Liberal member left in the assembly for a while.
In February 2014, Sandy Silver officially became the permanent leader of the Yukon Liberal Party. Everyone in the party agreed he should lead.
Leading the Government
In the 2016 election, Sandy Silver led the Liberals to a big win. His party went from having just one seat to winning 11 out of 19 seats. This meant they formed a majority government. A majority government means a party has more than half the seats. This allows them to pass laws more easily.
The Liberals had promised to make the economy stronger. They also wanted to protect the environment and improve relationships with First Nations people.
On December 3, 2016, Sandy Silver and his team were officially sworn in. He became the Premier. He was also in charge of the government's money as the Minister of Finance.
The 2021 Election and Beyond
Sandy Silver led the Liberals into the 2021 election. The party won 8 seats, which was the same number as the Yukon Party. This was a tie! Even though they tied, Silver announced he wanted to form a minority government. A minority government means a party has the most seats but not more than half. They need support from other parties to pass laws.
On April 23, 2021, the Liberals were sworn in with a minority government. A few days later, the NDP agreed to work with the Liberals. This helped the government run smoothly.
On September 9, 2022, Sandy Silver announced he would step down as Premier and party leader. He stayed on until a new leader was chosen. He also said he would not run for re-election in his Klondike area. Ranj Pillai took over as Premier after him. Sandy Silver currently serves as the Minister of Finance in the new government.
