Sandy Silver's Political Journey
Starting in the Assembly (2011-2016)
Sandy Silver was first elected on October 11, 2011. He won against Steve Nordick in the Klondike area. This was the only win for the Yukon Liberal Party in that election. Their group of elected members, called a caucus, became very small.
As an elected member, Sandy Silver worked on important committees. These committees help manage government money and choose people for important jobs. He also helped with committees looking into protecting people who report problems and studying a process called hydraulic fracturing.
In August 2012, Sandy Silver became the temporary leader of the Yukon Liberal Party. This happened after the previous leader, Darius Elias, left the party. Sandy Silver was then the only Liberal member in the assembly. Darius Elias later joined the governing Yukon Party.
Sandy Silver became the permanent leader of the Yukon Liberal Party in February 2014. He was chosen without anyone else running against him.
Leading the Government (2016-2021)
Sandy Silver led the Liberals to a big win in the 2016 election. His party went from having just one seat to 11 out of 19 seats. This meant they formed a majority government. This is when one party wins more than half the seats.
The Liberals also did very well in the smaller towns and rural areas of Yukon. Sandy Silver himself received the most votes of any candidate. His party had promised to make the economy stronger in different ways. They also promised to protect the environment and improve relationships with First Nations people.
Sandy Silver and his team of ministers, called the Cabinet, took office on December 3, 2016. His Cabinet had seven members, including four men and three women. Sandy Silver became the Premier. He also took on the jobs, or portfolios, of Minister of Finance and Minister of the Executive Council Office.
Continuing to Lead (2021-2023)
Sandy Silver led the Liberals into the 2021 election. His party won 8 seats, which was the same number as the Yukon Party. This was a tie in seats. The Yukon Party, however, received more votes overall. Sandy Silver was re-elected in the Klondike area.
Even with the tie, Silver announced his plan to form a minority government. This means his party would govern, but they would need support from other parties to pass laws. On April 23, the Liberals officially took office with a minority government. A few days later, the NDP party announced they would work with the Liberals.
On September 9, 2022, Sandy Silver announced he would step down as Premier and party leader. He stayed in his role until the party chose a new leader. He also said he would not run for re-election in his Klondike area in the next election. Ranj Pillai took over as Premier after him.
