A Look Back in Time
This beautiful church was built a long time ago, between 1854 and 1856. It was designed in a style called Neo-Gothic. This means it looks like old Gothic churches from the Middle Ages. The first designs were by John Thomas Emmett, and then John Honeyman finished the building.
How the Church Started
The church first opened as a "chapel of ease." This was a smaller church built to help people who lived far from the main Barony Church. It made it easier for them to attend services. In 1864, it became its own official church, known as Sandyford Parish Church. Later, in 1938, it joined with another church called Henderson Memorial. That's how it got its current name, Sandyford Henderson Memorial Church.
Art and Special Features
The church has many interesting features inside.
Beautiful Stained Glass Windows
You can see lovely stained glass windows in the church. Some of these windows have patterns of shapes and flowers. These were made by a company called Ballantine & Allan in 1857. The three large windows at the west side of the church are even more special. They tell stories through pictures and were created by William Wailes between 1859 and 1860. These amazing windows were carefully cleaned and fixed up between 2008 and 2009.
Remembering Heroes
In 1922, a special memorial was placed in the church. It remembers 20 brave men from the church's community. These men sadly lost their lives during World War I. It's a way to honor their memory and sacrifice.
Keeping the Church Beautiful
Over the years, the church has been looked after and improved. The outside stone parts of the church were repaired in 2000. Inside, the church got a fresh new look with a refurbishment in 2004. These updates help keep the historic building in great condition for everyone to enjoy.
