The Santa Fe Building is a very old and important building in downtown Amarillo, Texas, U.S.A.. It was finished on January 18, 1930. For many years, it was home to the main offices for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway company in this area. This railroad company was very big, and its Amarillo office managed over 5,800 miles (9,334 km) of train tracks!

Building History

The Santa Fe Building was built by the Brennan Construction Company. This company had offices in both Amarillo and Dallas. They worked on the building from 1928 to 1930. When it was first built, it cost about US$1.5 million. That was a lot of money back then!

A New Purpose

In the 1990s, the Santa Fe Building was empty for more than ten years. Then, in 1995, Potter County decided to buy it. They needed more space for their offices. The county paid $426,000 for the building.

After buying it, Potter County spent a lot of money to fix it up. They spent about $14.1 million to make the building new again. The building finally reopened in the year 2000. Now, it serves the people of Potter County.
