Discovering Santa Rosa de Tastil

Tastil ruins
Ruins of Tastil and the Lerma Valley

Santa Rosa de Tastil is nestled in the beautiful Lerma Valley. It's very close to the ruins of an old indigenous city called Tastil. This village is tiny, with only about eleven people living there! Three of these residents work at the Moisés Serpa Regional Museum of Tastil.

Even though it's small, Santa Rosa de Tastil has important services for its residents and about 150 people living in the nearby rural areas. These services include a clinic, a police station, a school, and a church. The village was named after Santa Rosa de Lima in 1906.

The Moisés Serpa Regional Museum of Tastil is a special place. It opened after the ancient ruins of Tastil were declared a National Historic Monument in 1997. The museum shows off many amazing things found at the Tastil site and around it.

One of the most interesting items on display is a mummy that is about 600 years old, dating back to the 14th century! The name "Tastil" comes from the local language and means "stone that sounds," referring to some special rocks found near the museum entrance.

The Train to the Clouds

Santa Rosa de Tastil is also famous because the Train to the Clouds passes by. This is a special heritage railway and one of the highest in the world! It's a popular tourist attraction, offering incredible views as it winds through the mountains. The Puerta de Tastil station is located nearby, making it a stop for this famous train.
