Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Saint Rosalia (born around 1130, died 1166), also known as Santa Rosalia, is a very special figure for the city of Palermo, Italy. She is considered the patron saint of Palermo, which means she is believed to be the city's protector. People in Palermo celebrate her with great devotion, especially during a big festival held every year in July.

Who Was Saint Rosalia?

Rosalia was born into a noble family in Sicily, Italy. Her father was said to be a relative of the Norman king, King Roger II. Even though she came from a wealthy background, Rosalia chose a different path. She decided to dedicate her life to God and became a hermit. This means she lived alone in a cave, far away from cities and people, spending her time in prayer and quiet reflection.

Rosalia's Life as a Hermit

Rosalia lived in a cave on Monte Pellegrino, a mountain near Palermo. She spent many years there, living a simple life and focusing on her faith. She is often shown in art wearing a simple robe and holding a cross or a skull, which are symbols of her hermit life and devotion.

The Discovery of Her Remains

For a long time after her death, Rosalia was not widely known. However, in 1624, during a terrible plague that hit Palermo, her remains were discovered in a cave on Monte Pellegrino. People believed that when her remains were carried through the city, the plague began to disappear. This event led to her being officially recognized as the patron saint of Palermo.

The Feast of Saint Rosalia

Every year, from July 10th to 15th, Palermo celebrates the "Festino di Santa Rosalia" (Feast of Saint Rosalia). It's a huge and colorful festival with parades, music, and fireworks. A large, decorated carriage carrying a statue of Saint Rosalia is pulled through the streets, reminding everyone of her importance to the city and the miracle of the plague ending.
