History of Santa Rosalía

The town of Santa Rosalía is named after Saint Rosalia. However, the original mission is not in the town itself. It is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south, in a place called Mulegé.
Santa Rosalía has a strong French feel, especially in its buildings. The French company, Compagnie du Boleo, started the town in 1884. They mined copper there until 1954. The company built many houses and even brought the metal Santa Bárbara Church to the town.
What makes Santa Rosalía special is that the old mining buildings are still there. They were never taken apart. You can see old locomotives, mining tools, and other machines everywhere. They are like decorations now. The main building of the mining company, called "La Dirección," is now the city hall. Its old offices have become an industrial museum.
El Boleo Copper Mines: Past and Present
The Boleo Mine is a unique place where copper, cobalt, zinc, and manganese were found. These minerals were located in seven large layers underground.
The Compagnie du Boleo, a French company, mined at El Boleo from 1885 until 1954. To keep the town from collapsing when the French left, a Mexican state-owned company took over. They used much of the same old equipment. This government-run mine was never very profitable. It finally closed in the 1980s because the ore was harder to get, and the technology was too old.
New Mining Efforts at El Boleo
A Canadian company, Baja Mining, started looking into the El Boleo mine again. They wanted to reopen it. They believed the mine still held a lot of ore. This ore contained copper, cobalt, and zinc. They also hoped to get manganese as a side product.
In 2010, Baja Mining teamed up with a group of Korean companies to start a big project. However, in 2012, the cost of building the new mine went over budget. Because of this, the Korean group took over most of the project. On January 26, 2015, the new company, Minera y Metalurgica del Boleo, successfully produced its first copper.
Geography and Travel

Santa Rosalía is a port city. A regular ferry boat connects it to Guaymas, Sonora. Guaymas is on the other side of the Gulf of California. At the Palo Verde Airport, you can find daily flights from Guaymas. There are also flights twice a week from Hermosillo, Sonora. The city is located along Mexican Federal Highway 1.
Santa Rosalía's Climate
Santa Rosalía is located near the warm waters of the Gulf of California. These waters are much warmer than the Pacific Ocean in winter. This makes Santa Rosalía the northernmost place on the main highway that stays warm all year. Even so, it doesn't get many "snowbirds," which are people who travel south for the winter.
