Santiago Arcos facts for kids
Santiago Arcos (born in 1822, died in 1874) was an important figure from Chile. He was a journalist, a politician, and a writer. He wrote a book called La cuestion de los indios: las fronteras y los indios in 1860. In this book, he suggested using the army to deal with conflicts involving indigenous people.

Early Life of Santiago Arcos
Santiago Arcos was the fourth and last son of Antonio Arcos and Isabel Petronila Arlegui Rodriguez. His father, Antonio, was a businessman and a military engineer from Spain.
After Bernardo O'Higgins lost power in 1823, Santiago's parents moved to Paris, France. There, they started a successful financial business.
Santiago Arcos Returns to Chile
Santiago Arcos was not happy living in France. He decided to go against his father's wishes and got involved in revolutionary politics. He traveled back to Chile through the United States. Once in Chile, he joined groups in Valparaíso that wanted to make big changes.
After the Revolutions of 1848 happened, his father also returned to Chile. He started Chile's very first bank. However, this bank did not last long. It closed in 1850 because of pressure from the government.
Santiago Arcos chose not to go back to Europe with his father. Instead, he helped create a revolutionary group called the Sociedad de Igualidad. This group played a key role in starting the 1851 Chilean Revolution.
Later, Arcos had to leave Chile. He went to Peru and then to Argentina. From there, he tried to help the revolutionary efforts in Chile.
Later Years
After many years of revolutionary work in South America, Santiago Arcos returned to Paris in 1865.
