Santiago Grisolía García (born January 6, 1923 – died August 4, 2022) was a famous Spanish scientist. He was a biochemist, which means he studied the chemical processes that happen inside living things. He was also given the special title of Marquess of Grisolía by the King of Spain because of his important work.

Santiago Grisolía's Early Life and Studies

Santiago Grisolía was born in Valencia, Spain. He loved learning and studied at the University of Valencia. In 1949, he earned his doctorate in medicine, which is a very high degree in the medical field.

After that, he went to New York University in the United States to continue his studies. There, he worked with another very famous scientist named Severo Ochoa. Later, Santiago Grisolía became a professor. He taught biochemistry and biology at big universities like the University of Kansas, the University of Chicago, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

What Santiago Grisolía Studied

Santiago Grisolía wrote more than 400 scientific papers. These papers shared his discoveries with other scientists. He was also involved with many science groups in Spain and other countries.

A lot of his work was about enzymes. Enzymes are special proteins that help chemical reactions happen in our bodies. For example, they help us digest food. Some of his first research looked at a chemical called citrulline. He also studied other important enzymes like phosphoglycerate mutase and carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase. His research helped us understand how our bodies work at a tiny, chemical level.

Awards and Honors

Santiago Grisolía received many special awards for his amazing contributions to science:

One of his biggest awards was the Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research in 1990. This is a very important award in Spain, like a Nobel Prize.

In 2014, King Juan Carlos I of Spain gave him the special title of Marquess of Grisolía. This was to recognize his great work as a researcher and teacher, and for all he gave to science.

Santiago Grisolía passed away in Valencia in 2022. He was 99 years old and left behind a wonderful legacy of scientific discovery.
