In 1997, Santiago took part in the World Race Walking Cup and the World Championships, both for the 50-kilometer race. He finished 21st in both events. The next year, in 1998, he achieved a great result at the European Championships in Budapest, Hungary, where he finished 6th in the 50 km race. This was one of his best individual finishes early in his career.
He continued to compete in 1999, participating in the World Race Walking Cup and the World Championships again. In 2000, at the European Race Walking Cup in Germany, he finished 8th in the individual 50 km race. Even better, his team won a silver medal, coming in 2nd place!
More Team Medals and Olympic Dreams
In 2001, Santiago and his team earned another silver medal at the European Race Walking Cup in Slovakia. He finished 4th in the individual 50 km race that year, showing his consistent performance. In 2002, he competed at the European Championships in Germany, finishing 12th.
One of the biggest highlights of his career was competing in the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, in 2004. He finished 8th in the 50 km race, which is an excellent achievement at the Olympics! That same year, he also placed 8th at the World Race Walking Cup.
