About Susan Coolidge

Sarah Chauncey Woolsey was born on January 29, 1835, in Cleveland, Ohio. Her family, the New England Dwight family, was very well-known and wealthy. When she was 17, her family moved to New Haven, Connecticut, where she spent most of her childhood.

During the American Civil War (1861–1865), Sarah worked as a nurse. After the war, she started writing. She never married and lived in her family home in Newport, Rhode Island, until she passed away.
