Sarah Catherine Darwin (born 1 April 1964) is a British botanist, which is a scientist who studies plants. She is a direct descendant of the famous naturalist Charles Darwin, her great-great-grandfather.

Education and Career

Sarah Darwin earned her first degree in Botany from Reading University in 1999. She later earned a PhD from University College London in 2009. For her PhD project, she studied the different types and genetics of tomatoes found on the Galapagos Islands.

Work in the Galápagos Islands

Her connection to the Galápagos Islands, which her famous ancestor helped make famous, began in 1995. She first went there on a family holiday but decided to stay longer to create drawings of plants for a field guide about the islands.

Today, she serves as an ambassador for the Galapagos Conservation Trust, a charity dedicated to protecting the unique wildlife and environment of the islands.

Fun with Science

In 2009, Sarah Darwin took part in a fun experiment to see if talking to plants helps them grow. She read parts of her great-great-grandfather's famous book, The Origin of Species, to a tomato plant. In the experiment, her plant grew taller than the others, leading news reports to say she had "won" the competition.

Recreating a Famous Voyage

From 2009 to 2010, Sarah appeared in a Dutch television series called Beagle: In Darwin's wake. In the show, she, her husband, and their children joined others on a modern sailing ship, the Stad Amsterdam. They recreated the historic journey that Charles Darwin took on the ship HMS Beagle in the 1830s.

Family Life

Sarah Darwin is the great-great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin. Her family line connects to him through his son, the astronomer George Howard Darwin.

In 2003, she married Johannes Vogel, who is also a botanist. He is the Director General of the Museum für Naturkunde (Natural History Museum) in Berlin, Germany. They have two sons, Leo and Josiah.

In 2005, Sarah and her family, along with other descendants of Charles Darwin, took part in a special event. They helped count the flowers at Down House, the historic home where Charles Darwin lived and worked.
