Sarah Ann Mitchell (born on 10 May 1982) is an Australian politician. She was known as Sarah Johnston before she got married. Sarah Mitchell was a very important person in the government of New South Wales, Australia. She used to be the Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning. This means she was in charge of schools and learning for young children.
Sarah Mitchell is a member of The Nationals political party. She has been a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council since March 2011. The Legislative Council is like one part of the parliament that helps make laws for the state. Before her role in education, she was also the Minister for Early Childhood Education and the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.

Early Life and Education
Sarah Mitchell was born in a town called Gunnedah, New South Wales. When she was a child, her family moved to Grafton, New South Wales. Later, she moved back to Gunnedah for high school. She finished her high school studies in 1999.
In 2001, Sarah moved to Sydney. She went to the University of New South Wales. There, she studied politics and how countries work together. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2016. After her studies, she returned to Gunnedah. She worked for a politician named John Anderson. She helped him with his work for the community. She continued this work for Mark Coulton after John Anderson retired.
Journey into Politics
Before becoming a member of parliament, Sarah Mitchell was very active in youth politics. She led the Young Nationals at both the national and state levels. These groups help young people get involved in politics.
In 2010, she was chosen to run for a spot in the New South Wales Legislative Council. This was for the 2011 New South Wales state election. It was a very close election, but she won a seat in parliament. She was elected under her maiden name, Johnston. A couple of weeks later, in April 2011, she married Anthony Mitchell and took his last name.
Working in Parliament
As a member of the Legislative Council, Sarah Mitchell worked on several special groups called committees. These committees study different topics and help make decisions. For example, she led a committee that looked into how a certain plant could help very sick people. The committee agreed that it could be helpful.
In 2015, she became a Parliamentary Secretary. This role helps a minister with their duties. She focused on health in regional and rural areas.
Becoming a Minister
In 2017, a new government was formed in New South Wales. Gladys Berejiklian became the Premier, like the leader of the state. Sarah Mitchell was then given important jobs as a Minister. She became the Minister for Early Childhood Education, the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, and the Assistant Minister for Education.
After the 2019 state election, Sarah Mitchell received an even bigger role. She was appointed the Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning. This meant she was responsible for all schools and early learning centers in New South Wales. She also became the Deputy Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council, helping to lead the government's work in that part of parliament. Her term as Minister for Education ended in March 2023.
