Sarah Ann Mitchell (born 10 May 1982) is an Australian politician. She used to be the Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning. This means she was in charge of schools and early learning centres in the state of New South Wales.
Sarah Mitchell is a member of The Nationals, a political party in Australia. She has been a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council since March 2011. The Legislative Council is like one of the two houses of parliament in New South Wales, where laws are debated and made.
Before becoming the Education Minister, she also served as the Minister for Early Childhood Education. She was also the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, working on issues important to Aboriginal people. For a time, she was also an Assistant Minister for Education.
Early Life and Education
Sarah Mitchell was born in a town called Gunnedah in New South Wales. When she was a child, her family moved to Grafton. Later, she moved back to Gunnedah for high school. She finished her Higher School Certificate, which is like a final exam for high school, in 1999.
In 2001, Sarah moved to Sydney. She went to the University of New South Wales where she studied politics and international relations. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2016. After finishing her studies, she returned to Gunnedah.
She worked as an "electorate officer" for a politician named John Anderson. An electorate officer helps a politician with their work, like talking to people in their local area and helping with their concerns. When John Anderson retired, Sarah continued to work for his replacement, Mark Coulton.
Political Journey
Before becoming a member of parliament, Sarah Mitchell was very active in youth politics. She was the president of the federal Young Nationals and the chairman of the state Young Nationals. These groups are for young people who support The Nationals party.
In 2010, she was chosen to be a candidate for the New South Wales Legislative Council in the 2011 state election. She was elected to the Legislative Council in a very close election. Just two weeks after being elected, she got married to Anthony Mitchell and changed her last name from Johnston to Mitchell.
As a member of the Legislative Council, she has worked on several committees. These committees look closely at different topics and issues to help make better laws.
In 2015, Sarah Mitchell was appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Rural Health and Western NSW. This role meant she helped the government with health issues in country areas of New South Wales.
When Gladys Berejiklian became the Premier (the leader of the state government) in 2017, Sarah Mitchell was given important roles. She became the Minister for Early Childhood Education, the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, and the Assistant Minister for Education.
After the 2019 state election, Sarah Mitchell was appointed as the Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning. She was also made the Deputy Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council. This meant she helped lead the government's work in that part of parliament.
