Sarah Wewitzer (born around 1756, died 1820) was a talented British actress and singer. Later in her life, she became known as Lady Tyrawley, especially in Ireland.

Sarah Wewitzer's Early Life and Career

Sarah Wewitzer was born in 1756. Her parents were Peter and Ann Wewitzer. Her family had roots in Norway.

Starting as an Actress and Singer

Sarah began her acting career in 1772. She was very good at performing plays by Isaac Bickerstaff. Sarah wasn't the only performer in her family. Her older sister and her brother, Ralph Wewitzer, were also entertainers.

Performances in London and Dublin

Before 1772, Sarah might have performed as a singer. In 1774, she may have sung at a place called Marylebone Gardens in London. Later, Sarah moved to Dublin, Ireland. She became a regular performer at the Smock Alley Theatre there. By 1775, people were praising her acting and singing skills.

Becoming Lady Tyrawley

Sarah Wewitzer started a family with James Cuffe. He was a member of parliament for Mayo, a county in Ireland. Sarah and James had two sons together. One of their sons, also named James, later became a member of parliament too.

A New Title

In 1797, James Cuffe was given a special title. He became Baron Tyrawley. When his wife passed away in 1808, Sarah Wewitzer began to use the title "Lady Tyrawley." She was known by this name for the rest of her life.

Later Years and Legacy

Sarah Wewitzer passed away on October 4, 1820. She died in a town called Ballinrobe, in Ireland.

Remembering Sarah Wewitzer

There are tombstones in the Ballinrobe churchyard that remember Sarah and her family. One tombstone is for Henry Cuff, who died in 1811. He was a son of James Cuff, Baron of Tyrawley. Another tombstone in the same churchyard honors Sarah. It says "Right Honr. Sarah, Baroness Tyrawly" and notes her death on October 4, 1820.
