Sarat Kumar Kar (born September 5, 1939 – died October 12, 2020) was an important politician and talented writer from Odisha, India. He was a member of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) political party.

A Life in Politics

Sarat Kumar Kar was a very active politician for many years. He was a member of the 6th Lok Sabha from 1977 to 1980. The Lok Sabha is like one of the main law-making groups in India. He was also chosen three times to be a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly from a place called Mahanga. The Legislative Assembly is where laws are made for the state of Odisha. He served in this role from 2000 to 2004, 1990 to 1995, and 1971 to 1974.

Becoming a Young Minister

In 1971, Sarat Kumar Kar became the Minister for Education and Culture. This was part of a government led by Bishwanath Das. He was probably the youngest person ever to become a Cabinet Minister in Odisha's history. This is a record that still stands today!

Leading the Assembly

From March 10, 2000, to May 21, 2004, he held a very important position. He was the Speaker of the Twelfth Assembly. The Speaker is like the leader who makes sure meetings run smoothly and everyone follows the rules.

Starting His Political Journey

Sarat Kumar Kar began his journey in politics in 1964. This was after he finished his master's degree in Political Science from the famous Allahabad University. While studying there, he met a very inspiring leader named Lal Bahadur Shastri. Mr. Shastri encouraged him to join politics. Sarat Kumar Kar even attended political meetings with him.

After returning to Odisha, Mr. Shastri asked him to meet another important leader, Biju Patnaik. Biju Patnaik liked Sarat Kumar Kar very much, and they became close friends. Sarat Kumar Kar remained a trusted helper to Biju Patnaik until Biju Patnaik passed away.

A Talented Writer and Speaker

Besides being a politician, Sarat Kumar Kar was also a gifted writer. He wrote four books of poetry. He also wrote a long story and a spiritual book. He wrote hundreds of articles for newspapers and magazines. These articles covered many topics like literature, society, spirituality, and politics in the Odia language.

He was also known for being a great speaker. He often talked about politics and culture. He was a very devoted follower of Lord Jagannath. For 45 years, he gave live commentary on the Lord's Car Festival, also known as "Rath Yatra." He did this for All India Radio, Doordarshan, and other TV channels.

His Family

Sarat Kumar Kar's wife, Anima Mishra Kar, was a retired Professor of English. She is also a talented singer and was a top artist for All India Radio in Cuttack for many years.

His elder son, Suman Kar, works as a lecturer in English in Bhubaneswar. His younger son, Sobhan Kar, is an officer in the Indian Revenue Service. He works for the Government of India in New Delhi. Sarat Kumar Kar's brother, Rajat Kumar Kar, is also a well-known person.

His Passing

Sarat Kumar Kar passed away on October 12, 2020. He was 81 years old. He died from COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
