Saratha A. Goggins (born 1950/51) is an American politician. She made history as the first woman to serve as mayor of East Cleveland, Ohio.
Saratha Goggins' Political Journey
Saratha Goggins was a dedicated public servant in East Cleveland. She spent many years working on the East Cleveland City Council. Her hard work led her to become the president of the council.
Becoming Mayor of East Cleveland
On September 1, 2004, Saratha Goggins took on a new role. She was sworn in as the mayor of East Cleveland. This happened after the previous mayor stepped down. Her election was a significant moment for the city. She became the first female mayor of East Cleveland. She was also the fourth African-American mayor to lead the city.
Mayoral Election of 2005
In October 2005, Mayor Goggins ran for re-election. She was a candidate for the Democratic Party. However, she was not successful in this primary election. Eric J. Brewer won the election against her. He received 54.90% of the votes. Mayor Goggins received 29.96% of the votes. Her term as mayor ended on January 1, 2006.
