Emmanuel Onunwor (born May 24, 1952) is an American politician who was born in Nigeria. He served as the mayor of East Cleveland, Ohio.

Early Life and Education
Emmanuel Onunwor was born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He went to primary and secondary schools there.
In 1980, he moved to the United States. He studied at Cleveland State University, where he earned two degrees. He got a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in urban studies. Urban studies is about how cities work and how to improve them.
Becoming Mayor of East Cleveland
In November 1997, Emmanuel Onunwor ran for mayor of East Cleveland. He ran as a candidate who was not part of a specific political party. He won the election against the current mayor, Wallace D. Davis, with 62.56% of the votes.
On January 1, 1998, he officially became the mayor. This was a special moment because he was the first African-born Black mayor in the United States.
Re-election and Later Years
In November 2001, Mayor Onunwor ran for re-election. This time, he ran as a member of the Republican Party. He won again with 71.19% of the votes, defeating Eric J. Brewer. Eric J. Brewer later became mayor in 2005.
Emmanuel Onunwor served as mayor until September 1, 2004. After his time as mayor ended, Saratha Goggins took over. She was the President of the East Cleveland City Council and became the first female mayor of East Cleveland.
