Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan was an important political leader. He was born on June 1, 1934. He served as the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir two times. He was also the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He holds the record for being the longest-serving Prime Minister of this region.

Early Life and Education
Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan came from a well-known political family. His father was Sardar Fateh Muhammad Khan Karela vi. Sikandar Hayat Khan studied at Gordon College (Rawalpindi). He graduated from there in 1956. Later, in 1958, he earned a law degree. He studied law at the University Law College in Lahore.
Starting His Political Journey
After finishing his studies, he went back to Kotli. There, he began his career as a lawyer. He decided to join politics and became a member of the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference. He was very active in his community. He successfully ran for a spot on the local council. He held this position for eight years. During this time, he was also chosen as the President of the Bar Association in Kotli. In 1970, he was elected to the Azad Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly. This was a big step in his political life.
Becoming a Leader
Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan was very popular in his area. He won every election in his constituency from 1970 to 2001. The only times he did not run were when he was serving as the President of Azad Kashmir. During those years, his brother, Sardar Muhammad Naeem Khan, took his place.
He became the acting President of the Jammu & Kashmir Muslim Conference. This was from 1976 to 1978. Then, in 1978, he was officially elected as the President of the party. He held this important role until 1988.
His Time as Prime Minister and President
In 1985, Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan was elected as the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. He served in this top position for five years. After that, he became the leader of the opposition in the Assembly. This meant he led the main group that was not in power.
In 1991, he was elected as the President of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. He served a five-year term as President. On July 25, 2001, he became Prime Minister of Azad Jammu & Kashmir for a second time. He completed his second term in July 2006. After this, he decided to retire from active politics.
