History of Sargent

Sargent has an interesting past. Long ago, it had a different name: "Lodi".

Early Days as Lodi

The area was first known as Lodi. In 1835, a post office was opened there. A post office is a place where people can send and receive mail, buy stamps, and handle other postal services. It was an important building for the community back then.

Changing to Sargent

Many years later, in 1892, the name of the community was officially changed from Lodi to Sargent. The new name was chosen to honor two brothers, George and Captain H. J. Sargent. These brothers were important people in the area because they owned a local cotton mill. A cotton mill is a factory where raw cotton is spun into thread and woven into fabric. This was a big business in Georgia during that time.
