Sarrasani was a very famous circus from Germany. It started in the city of Dresden. Later, it even became the national circus of Argentina!

The Beginning of Sarrasani

A clown named Hans Stosch started Sarrasani. His stage name was Giovanni Sarrasani. He first came to Radebeul in 1901. The circus officially opened in Meißen in 1902.

In 1912, a special circus building opened in Dresden. It was a permanent home for the circus. Sarrasani often performed in other countries. The circus was famous for its Elephants and its performers who looked like Sioux Native Americans.

Leaders of the Circus

Hans Stosch-Sarrasani senior died in 1934 in São Paulo. His son, Hans Stosch-Sarrasani junior, became the new director. He died in 1941 in Berlin. His wife, Trude Stosch-Sarrasani, then took over.

The Sarrasani circus building in Dresden was destroyed. This happened on February 13, 1945, during World War II.

Sarrasani in Argentina

After the war, Trude Stosch-Sarrasani moved to Argentina. She started the circus again in Buenos Aires. The leaders of Argentina at the time, Perón and Evita, called Sarrasani the Circo Nacional Argentino. This means it was the national circus of Argentina. The Argentine Sarrasani circus continued until 1972.

Sarrasani Returns to Germany

In 1956, an artist named Fritz Mey brought the German Sarrasani back to life. His partner, Ingrid Wimmer, was adopted by Trude Stosch-Sarrasani in 1976.

André Sarrasani is the son of Fritz Mey and Ingrid Wimmer. He has been leading the circus since 2000. Sarrasani came back to Dresden in 1990. This was the first time in 45 years! Today, André Sarrasani performs a dinner and variety show called Trocadero in Dresden.

Trude Stosch-Sarrasani passed away on June 6, 2009.
