Sasamuta-jinja (西寒多神社) is a special place in Japan. It is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Ōita, Ōita, on the island of Kyushu. Shinto shrines are places where people go to worship kami, which are spirits or gods in the Shinto religion.
History of Sasamuta-jinja
Chief Shrine of the Past
Sasamuta-jinja was once known as the chief Shinto shrine of the old Bungo Province. This meant it was the most important shrine in that area. Today, it is still considered one of the main shrines in Oita Prefecture.
Worshiping Amaterasu Oomikami
This shrine is very special because it is dedicated to a kami named Amaterasu oomikami (天照皇大御神). Amaterasu Oomikami is a very important sun goddess in the Shinto religion. People visit Sasamuta-jinja to honor her.
