Satsuma is a small, unincorporated community in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place with a shared identity but no official local government. Satsuma is located along U.S. Route 190, a main road between the towns of Walker and Livingston. This community was originally known as Stafford.

The name "Satsuma" came about because of a rule from the U.S. Post Office Department. This rule stated that two post offices in the same state could not have the exact same name.

The Original Name: Stafford

The area now known as Satsuma was first named Stafford by the Baton Rouge, Hammond & Eastern Railroad Company. This happened when they built a train station there in 1908. It's thought that the station was named after a local family, as this was a common practice for the railroad.

The Stafford Family's History

The Stafford family has deep roots in Livingston Parish. You can find several old cemeteries named after them, showing their long history in the area. These include the Hiram Stafford Cemetery and the Stephen Stafford Cemetery. Another Stafford Cemetery is located north of Livingston, on land bought by Wright Stafford in 1862.

Stafford Road is a local road about two miles north of Satsuma. It runs parallel to U.S. Highway 190 and connects Cane Market Road with North Livingston Road.

Why the Name Changed to Satsuma

The Satsuma Post Office was officially opened on February 24, 1911. Its first postmaster was Rae E. Penniman. However, this post office closed on October 31, 1938.

When the post office was being set up in Livingston Parish, there was already a "Stafford Post Office" in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. Because of the Post Office Department's rule, the new facility in Livingston Parish could not use the name Stafford.

So, the people living near Stafford Station chose a new name: Satsuma. They picked this name because a man from the North had a large orchard of satsuma orange trees right next to the railroad tracks. These sweet, easy-to-peel oranges gave the community its unique name!
